Career in Plumbing can be Fulfilling and Lucrative

The plumbing industry is a great one to step into if you feel you have the right attributes. This is mainly due to the fact that plumbers are always in high demand as they fulfil an essential role in society. People always call plumbers in emergencies when their boiler has stopped working, or some other system has become damaged. If you wish to be part of an industry that contributes to the better life of others, then this could be the right choice for you.

It is important to note that plumbing is essentially a physical job. If you are the kind of person that enjoys working with your hands, and does not mind working in camped conditions from time to time, then plumbing could just be the career option for you. Plumbing offers good pay and there is great potentiality for future long term benefits. Plumbing is also the type of sector that is unlikely to be overtaken by some form of technological advancement. Therefore a plumber will always be needed, thus providing no shortage of jobs.

There are numerous tasks that you will be involved in as a plumber. The following are just some of the many you will be doing:

  • doing repair work on hot and cold water systems

  • ensuring that tanks and pipework are fitted to a reasonable standard

  • being involved in installing and maintaining gas, oil and solid fuel appliances

  • making sure that domestic appliances such as showers are repaired and installed correctly

The types of qualities and attributes a plumber will need?

You will need to have a positive well mannered approach particularly as you will be dealing with people on a regular basis. You will also need to be prepared to get your hands dirty. You will be working on complex equations, so an aptitude for math will be necessary. Of course not every job is perfect so you will need to be prepared to work in cramped conditions at times, and have the stamina to do physical work day after day. You will be working with a wide range of tools and equipment so it will help if you are a quick learner and adaptor.   As you will be working on other people's properties, you will need to maintain a respectful attitude and uphold a professional manner.  If all of this appeals to you, and you feel you can be the right fit for the job then plumbing can lead to great long term job satisfaction for you.

What qualifications do you need?

It is essential that you obtain the right skills in order to train as a plumber. Most  follow the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) route or the (SNVQ in Scotland). This qualification entails  both theory and practical work in the classroom/purpose built training facility and work based experience with a working plumber.  Most of the  colleges are known to  help students find a work placement, however many students organise it themselves.

There are a range of programs out there for your offering, and it is up to you to decide which course will be most suited to you. You may simply wish to take a short plumbing course to learn some skills. On the other hand, you may be interested in making a long term career out of it, therefore a longer program would suit you more.
