In North London Wanstead, afluent South Woodford, suburban Upper Edmonton and Tottenham are mainly characterised by terraced houses and long established local high streets. Across the north and east areas such as Plaistow, nearby Poplar, super-trendy Stoke Newington and Hackney have recently seen a remarkable drive of regeneration which have also pulled along Stratford, home of the Olympics, Palmers Green and Bethnal Green all the way down to Southgate. With Beckton and Chingford rounding up the area, North East London is a heavily populated area, mostly using combination boilers within flats or small houses. Many of these boilers are still unfortunately old and very inefficient, which impact their performance and their carbon emissions.
Highbury and Islington, known for their nightlife and posh high street are home to many creative residents. Holloway and Upper Holloway continue this trend to some extent but develop their own unique character, bordered by Highgate, to the east Hornsey and further down to East Finchely and Finsbury Park (which is famous for its open space). Wood Green, up and coming Walthamstow, family-friendly Winchmore Hill and New Southgate are mainly residential areas with local terraces and semi detached houses, typically using simple conventional boiler systems or have over the years upgraded to condensing and combination boilers. Further afield, Lower Edmonton, and affluent Finchely and North Finchley are starting to show a more suburban look with larger houses and more open spaces. Whetstone and Mill Hill continue this trend with a large open (almost rural) character represented by large houses and back gardens. Muswell Hill is a combination of suburban and urban neighbourhood, with a lively high street and a mix of houses and blocks of flats.
Greenwich is a famous tourist destination, flanked by Deptford, well-known for its docks, Rotherhithe and artists hang-out New Cross on the west and Charlton, famous for football at the Valley. Along the riveer Woolwich with its docks, Eltham home to a Palace and Blackheath with its common are to the east with Thamesmead and Abbey Wood providing the border of this part of town. Lewisham is famous for its long high street (which was notably bombed by a V1 during the war), and is adjacent to Lee, park-like Brockley, singleton's target Catford and family-focused Forest Hill. The lovely village of Dulwich is bordered by Herne Hill, densely-populated Peckham, greener West Norwood and Streatham further to the west. A mixture of Georgian houses and tower blocks, Camberwell is surrounded by the tower blocks of Walworth, the pretty park and Lido at Stockwell, the trendy lofts of Southwark and South Lambeth. Nearby Upper Norwood and South Norwood offer a suburban idyll. Nearby Tooting is a property development hot-spot as is Kennington which is also served by the Northern Line of the London Underground. Further south Sydenham and Anerley are beautiful places to live but not well-served for transport.
From swanky Holland Park and its mansions, West London extends east towards Bayswater and Kensington, northbound towards Maida Vale and adjacent St John’s Wood. Some of the most exciting neighbourhoods in London are in West London including media heaven Notting Hill, central and hopping Earls Court, gentrified and trendy Marylebone and home of many BBC staff Shepherds Bush. The west also includes several large residential areas such as Hammersmith, home of refurbishments Acton, exciting Ealing, convenient West Kensington, suburban Hanwell and West Ealing.
Home to famous celebrities, Hampstead and Belsize Park in north west London, are bordering traditional residential areas such as predominantly Jewish Golders Green and Hendon to the north and hip and young Camden, central Charing Cross and gentrifying Kentish Town to the south. Cricklewood, with is suburban rows, tonier Kilburn and Kingsbury are further afield and are less hip, but more residential character, with Willesden combining residential and commercial characteristics.
